2015 Employer Champion Awards and Recognition Dinner

On the evening of Thursday November 5, 2015, Saffron’s of Fanshawe was the place to be as the Apprenticeship Network held its annual gala to celebrate exemplary employers of apprentices across the Elgin, Oxford and Middlesex regions. This year’s nominated employers proved to be both numerous and outstanding in their commitment to mentoring.

Members of the Apprenticeship Network greeted thirteen nominated employers and their guests, plus representatives from the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (MTCU), both School Boards, the Ontario College of Trades (OCOT), Fanshawe College, the Elgin Middlesex Oxford Workforce Planning and Development Board, and assorted job developers and Community Service Providers.

Dr. Joel Lopata

All sat down to a fabulous meal crafted by students of Fanshawe’s Culinary courses, then settled down to hear a thought-provoking presentation from keynote speaker, Dr. Joel Lopata. Dr. Lopata’s recently completed research of apprenticeship completion in our region has clearly shown that while apprentices do face barriers in reaching their ‘finish line,’ they face good prospects for solid employment. Dr. Lopata continued that many recent university graduates are facing underemployment and a general mood of pessimism, in contrast to a very optimistic timbre felt by those choosing a skilled-trade focused career. The audience at Saffron’s this evening couldn’t agree more!

Employers were nominated variously by school board cooperative education teachers, employment service providers, job developers, and MTCU training consultants. From the nominees, winners in five categories had been chosen through a vote by members of the Apprenticeship Network. The nominees and winners were announced by our perennial Master of Ceremonies, MTCU Service Delivery Manager Mark Harrison:

The members of the Apprenticeship Network wish to thank Safron’s, Fanshawe College, the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities, the London District Catholic and Thames Valley District School Boards, our community partners, and most appropriately, the many employers of apprentices in the city of London, and the Middlesex, Oxford, and Elgin counties for their vital, vigorous, and ongoing support.
